Countdown to AMAA 2016: Sadiq Daba wins Big

Countdown to AMAA 2016: Sadiq Daba wins Big

Popularly Known as Bitrus, in one of Nigeria’s most celebrated TV series, Cockcrow at dawn, veteran journalist and actor, Sadiq Daba received the award of Africa’s Best Actor, for his role in ‘October 1’ at the African Movie Academy Awards 2015 (AMAA) which held in Gauteng, South Africa. For many observers, it was an award well deserved, Sadiq belongs to a rare breed of actors particularly in Nigeria whose works have remained golden in the hearts of people. Many even wondered why it took so long for such a talent to be recognized, and he says ‘I don’t know why it took this long. I doubt if there is any government in Nigeria on whatever level that would say they didn’t grow up watching ‘Cock crow at dawn?’ They cannot say they don’t know me or know my work. Therefore if they so choose not to recognise me, well good luck to them. There is no place I step into that somebody doesn’t recognise or call me. I went to do documentary for one state. The governor said he was in secondary school when he used to watch me on NTA. I was telling him ‘rankasidede’ and he was saying the same back to me and saying to his cabinet members that if they didn’t know me, then they didn’t know anybody in Nigeria. This has happened in several other states and even at the federal government level. So, whatever their reasons are for the non- recognition is up to them’.

Though not a real fan of Nollywood, one thing for sure is that we will see more of Bitrus in more flicks, particularly ones that would blaze further trails.

The Africa Movie Academy Award was held on Saturday, September 26, 2015, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. This year, the award committee received over 800 entries from 60 countries and your magazine was there with live coverage.
